What laptop is best for someone who wants to 3D model/render?
I've been looking for a laptop I can use for 3D software and also play games, but I don't know what kind of graphics card I really need. I know RTX is great for rendering realistic things, but for the price... maybe I can get by with a GTX 1070? I dunno. I would like to have my laptop be somewhat "future proof" so I won't need to buy a new one in 2-3 years

Don’t watch the video, he just says to buy the previous years laptop. Because of price versus performance.

Wait... But if the problem is that the monitor is not good enough... Couldn't you just connect it to a more powerful monitor when you're home? At least that's what my plan would be, since I wouldn't play video games outside the comfort of my home with a laptop..

You can, and that's exactly my plan too haha, got a good deal on an rtx 2060 laptop, and outside of home I'll be using the laptop for professional work: cad, Revit, 3d modelling, Photoshop... So I think having a 1080p screen will be okay

well it's like 70 days old and it wasnt out at the time of the video. but atm sure i'd go along with saying if someone wants to be edging into more 1440p gaming at 60fps or even higher fps at 1080p the gtx 1660ti is a great laptop GPU.

                          the main problem was:
                          most gaming LCDs were AWFUL!!
                          1080p? In static. 2k? 4k? In static.
when you have 120hz marketed LCD which is 35 ms you effectively get 1000/35 = 30!!! fps LCD. 1080p? no! In dynamic you get like 480p equivalent.
An thank God and engeneers we get in 2019 6-10 ms LCDs which are effectively 100fps+
which means we factually get that 1080p hilarious resolution in dynamic.
And 1080p is perfectly sufficient for 15 and IMAO 17" screens.

Next year the new consoles are arriving,
so is there much sense buying a PC right now, when you can get a console 4X faster than the XB1X, capable of 4K and maybe 8K gaming or 120fps for a price below 500€ in about a year?

@Michael Ivanov you understand i did write
NATIVE 4k60fps with minimal reliance on checkerboard rendering and dynamic resolution."
these consoles are coming out in Q4 2020. that's basically 2021 so to compare them in speculation to what we have now is dumb.
BUT the consoles Will be able to achieve even greater fps at lower and higher resolutions IF (more like when) checkerboard rendering takes a massive "load" off the system power wise.. they also aren't upgradable so the ps5 and Xbox creators will clearly need that "performance" to make them relevant for 5 years.

also it should be stressed that Nvidia and AMD ARE going to be releasing their next/first iteration of RTX cards which will see a massive potential boost in performance and this allows game devs to spend less time and resources developing "fake" global illumination and in Nvidias case built on Samsungs 7nm+process iirc so i'm also expecting there is be a huge focus for them and their RT and Tensor core ability along with the performance boost since Samsungs 7nm process is pretty dense and yields well.

remember 4K gaming wasn't really a thing a few years ago and here we are en masse. Budget cards are continuing to push into higher resolutions with greater performance and in short time i feel we'll be seeing NATIVE 4K(no upscaling/checkerboard, like consoles need)possible on a xx70 type of gpu.

@JG14 Gerhard_Bar most TVs have 100Hz panels so there is no real need for even more performance. But the consoles are still great performance/€.
It won't match a high end PC but the price is also just a friction.

I mean PC and consoles are great, and I hope that the next gen will enhance the gaming experience we have significantly and not just the pixel or fps count

because by Q4 2020(when they're releasing) the next iteration of GPUs will also be out dude. remember any gains on the console front still mean PCs get their own leap. the next consoles better be x4 more power if they were anything less it'd be pathetic. i feel the main goal of the 2020 consoles is real Native 4k60fps with minimal reliance on checkerboard rendering and dynamic resolution. meaning they push the envelope further in terms of fps maximum playable res and overall quality at a lower resolution like 1440p 144fps or even 1080p 240fps with all the tricks used.

RTX cards are not only for gaming at a higher resolution. Whats the point of 2k monitor to be able to play at 50-60 fps in a competetive shooter? You get maximum performance for higher fps. Gaming laptops are alternatives for games to be able to play wherever you want. 2k and 144+ will not be available for 3-4k in the upcoming years

take in that your gpu is actually 1700+ days old, the 970m isnt outdated just yet m8. but it will be whenever the gtx 1050ti max Q is. the gpu has done well for it's time and will still hold up for another few years on low-medium. I wouldnt reccomend upgrading from it unless you're really "suffering" i suspect the 2020 gpus will bring some pretty major changes since they'll also on samungs 7nm process and will push performance even further than current RTX line.

What a nice unbiased advice from you Dave. I really appreciate it. And I was afraid of this message being spread out on social media. Yesterday I bought Razer’s 15 inch 144hz 1070gpu and I feel like I don’t need to upgrade for like 6 years. Why? Because I’m not so fanatic with new games. I actually use it for my design projects. Which is fairly enough for me. So I admit that this advice is 100% true. No need to pay more money for things that are not demanding at the moment.

There's still utility in RTX laptops for those using them as a desktop replacement, docking it to a higher quality monitor, etc.. But the price needs to compete with the cost of a desktop setup of equal performance

Why do you feel higher resolution gaming benefits on a laptop? Unless we get bigger than a 17" laptop I doubt it'd be any good as a laptop for mobility reason just to take advantage of something like 1440p or 4k. A 27" 1440p is the same ppi as a 17" at 1080p. In my regards, I'm enjoying ultra settings above 90fps on a 144hz panel and that wouldn't be possible with lower gpus.

Honestly I feel purchases are justified and that it only get messy if you're not deciding to be an enthusiast, and even then like you said, 2060 is a decent price, and the 2060 mobile beats the 1070 mq and even trades blows with the desktop 1070 in a handful of benches.
