    Many of you have been asking since the channel began for me to make a video that helps you fall asleep and stay asleep. Insomnia is a huge problem and I totally understand that. There are also a ton of how to fall asleep faster or how to stay asleep videos out there but I feel too many of them are not evidence-based nor even really expert based.

    These sleep routine tips and bedroom hacks, including swapping out synthetic for cotton sheets, will help you get the ZZZZZs you need to take on the day; and the best part is that the power to improve your sleep and beat your insomnia is right in your hands!

    Just so you know I can talk about sleep for hours so if there is a specific question of yours on sleep that has been left unanswered please jump into the comments section and I will do my best to respond right there or in my monthly responding to comments video!

                          Hi dr mike this is really good for me but I’m legally blind and I don’t know if you know about sleep insomnia but then again you are a doctor LOL! But I get confused between my nights and days because I am legally blind so I guess I take melatonin and chamomile tea at night right before I sleep it does help but not really I still kind of wake up what do you think suggestions thanks

                                        What's your advice for someone whose job does not have consistent patterns (one day starting at 9am, the next at 6pm until 10pm, to start at 9am again)?

                                        This is currently my problem. I cannot maintain my circadian rhythm as the shifts overlap by standard bedtime.

                                                                    Hi Dr. Mike! I love your attitude about medicine and trying behavioral strategies first. I’m a clinical psychology trainee and have treated insomnia numerous times with CBT-I. In that treatment, the consistency piece you mentioned is really import except waking up at the same time is emphasized, not going to sleep at the same time every night. This is because you should go to sleep at or past your “bedtime” when you’re SLEEPY. We want clients to be sleepy when they get into bed so they start associating their bed with sleep instead of wakefulness or negative emotions and thoughts about sleep (e.g., being frustrated because you aren’t falling asleep at your set bedtime and thinking something is wrong with you). The same would be true for when you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t fall back asleep. Like you suggested, to get out of bed, but to return when sleepy instead of in 15 minutes and to do boring activities during that time. Overall the goal is to pair the bed with calm and sleepy instead of wakeful and annoyed (this is called stimulus control). Also, waking up at the same time is emphasized because this is how you can get your circadian rhythm in check and on routine. These recommendations are for insomnia, but I imagine they are generally good sleep advice too. I’m only commenting about this because I’ve seen some of your videos and can tell that you value education! Everything else you said sounded great.

                                                                      My girls are all grown now but as a single mom to 3, I was lucky if I got 5 hours of sleep a night. Three teenage girls and one parent is not conducive to getting 7-9 hours of sleep. The struggle is real.

                                                                                          No naps during the day, stop eating/drinking 3 hrs before bed,set an alarm for 7-8 hours, pitch black cool room and sleep through your thoughts, whether positive or a nightmare, do not allow them to wake you up before the alarm goes off.
