PCI-E is a hot swapable standard, yet Windows does not support it.

this would be great for the old surface pro with the graphics card in the keyboard. the bluescreened occasionally when you disconnected the keyboard. literally this would be great for any mobile solution if they could make a more robust pcie port of some decription.

What happens when you run SLI and remove 1 of the graphics cards? Or for that matter, what happens when you remove a working graphics card? Just a system crash or will it fall back to the iGPU (if there is one)

fuck I unplug the power, turn off the power supply and drain the capacitors when I'm tinkering with the pci slots and you can do it when the system is on with this thing.

Wow brings back memories... in the early 2000 I used to hot plug pretty much everything at work, including PCI (there was no PCIE yet), CPUs and RAM (only validated HP/IBM servers with validated parts)

The basic idea: You have to do EVERYTHING yourself. In case of Linux and an storage controller this means "unmount filesystem" "remove from LVM/RAID/whatever", use sysctl to do an scsi-remove on the kernel for every connected drive, then manually unload the driver, then manually unpower every connected drive, then manually unpowered every card, then remove it from the PCI-Tables. AND ONLY THEN remove the card itself. And I guess I forgot like ten more steps.

We charged our customers like this: Removing once single device: €50. For an storage controller with five devices this was like $300. If the system crashes we charge nothing and pay $20 per minute of downtime. If the system needs to be rebooted in a controlled way we reduce our charge by 66%. This was no kids play, you can believe me that.

It never worked reasonable with windows.

                                      Crass Spektakel  6 days back

And I forgot to mention: The Slots itself must be build to mechanically support hot swapping. Actually not too hard, they simply have slightly higher ground connectors and the Slot is usually 1-2mm higher than normal slots.
And about our charges, the €50 per device came atop of our normal charge of €40 per 15 Minutes of hand on. All Charges double outside business time. Man the early internet boom was great for ripping of unsuspecting customers, my boss sometimes wrote four digit bills for less than an hour of work done by two fresh and uneducated IT students...
