@Madeline Fleming both, take your body weight and times it by 12 that is the calorie intake to maintain your weight. To gain more weight increase that number to loose weight decrease that number. Be proactive in following your food groups and portions. Avoid fast food, they tend to make your diet more protein dependant. Try to remember too much of a good thing is bad for you; If your use to 6 or 7 cups of coffee try to cut back to 1 or 2. It's the same with alcohol if you go out occasionally, energy drinks, sugar and salt. This is just basic advice I've learned, diffinatly consult a nutritionist or dietitian for more in depth meal plans, because if you find that something is not working out as expected they will help you adjust it to fit you because everyone is different.

this would be a breeze if south Indian cuisine were to be more popular than north, they make the best tasting vegan-friendly dishes.

I challenge you to try *low-iodine diet!*

(Although I know that it's not meant for a long-term diet, usually it is done in two weeks before going through radioactive iodine therapy for thyroid disease. But it's soo hard to do since almost every food has iodine in it.)

Hey Doctor Mike! Have you read the “China Study” by T.Colin Campbell or “how not to die” by Michael Greger?

If you have, it would be great to hear your opinion about them. If you haven’t read them, the basic premise of both books is that eating plant based and cutting out meat is the ideal diet since the China study found that the protein in meat is like a fuel for breeding cancer and heart disease

Will you try whole 30. I like the concept of trying it for a month and slowly post that month reintroducing gluten, dairy, sugar, legumes ans alcohol weekly to pin point what you are sensitive or intolerant to.
Or you can simply do an allergy test I guess.

the gas-stuff changes after a few weeks and then actually shows up when you eat animal-based products. at least in my (and some friends') experience.

Mike the reason you had the gas was because when you go vegan you cut out meat and your body is expelling all of the toxins you had in your body , but it goes away eventually

The gas you had is because you ate way too much fiber without knowing it. It's common among people who go vegan, they don't measure their fiber intake. You need to eat a lot more pulses, grain, bread, than you think, and less vegetables. Also veganism is stupid. Why not eating cheese or honey ? Cows and bees aren't slaves. You can find well treated cows... Just buy milk from a farm you trust, it ain't that hard... If it's for religious reasons, fine. But those vegan fanatics who won't even wear wool are ridiculous.

I would rather you encouraged people to grow their own food in their garden or at a local shared community garden. Not only do you get cheaper food, but gardening is a stress relief, just as good for your body as eating healthy. It's not by ordering food online and getting it delivered that you'll feel better IMO.

I don't know why ppl find farting/ gassing embarassing. It's a natural biological essential process of the body, like breathe, eat, drink, yawn, pee, poop, sweat, etc. Especially when he's around ppl with high educated, working in medical fields, they should know and act better. And I'm a vegan myself too, for the animals. It's just a mind thing. When you are vegan long enough, you don't even see meat or other animals products as delicous, you just ignore all thinfs that you used to like or most ppl still like, and only go for the vegetables/ fruit/ vegan food. Biologically my body had some diguest problems in the first 2 weeks, after that it improved much better than before. It's good for the animals, for your body, and for the environment. Once I compared the nutrition of 2 packages, one is soy milk, one is normal cow milk, and surpisingly they share the same value, if not the soy one less choresteron and other hormones.

Humans are Omnivores. We evolved to be omnivores; we are biologically designed to eat like omnivores. Which is why veganism is such a ridiculous stretch! Everything in moderation people. Period.

I have prothrombin gene mutation that causes my blood to clot. It almost killed me in 2008. I cannot eat green vegetables (I do eat Green Beans because they are low in Vitamin K), soy products really screw my blood up and the balance is very delicate between my blood being too thick or too thin (thank God I don't drink, which thins the blood). Could you be a vegan with this ailment?

The fact you eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch, means you're not doing any diet right.
Sugar along with any refined carbs and fats cause major stress.
Your problem with the flatulence and stomach upset isn't from the "vegan" diet, since veganism is a life style not a diet, but I digress.
What happens is your diet is lacking in fiber from even a Mediterranean diet.
No matter what your blood work says the digestive system isn't functioning properly.
To cure those problems you need to cleanse and eat a strict vegetarian whole food diet, and quit thinking "is this vegan?"
                                                                                        That's not going to help.
Checking your response to glucose with various food is the only way to know what cells are damaged, and to which extent.
After you heal the digestive tract can the problems go away and other foods get incorporated.
If your shoulder was frozen from an injury, wouldn't you go to PT and fix the problem, or would you just take a bunch of opiates to mask the pain?
That's what you're doing, noticing your digestive system has been dysfunctional, and thinking eating to eliminate symptoms, but not curing is the solution.
Eating healthy, so the machinery is well tuned, is just as important, if not more important than the actual exercise. Since think about it, at some point you won't be able to be as active by limits of your body's physical reaction alone, therefore diet is the main driver.
Your lack of motivation isn't from the diet, but a psychological response to the brain fog caused by decades worth of processed foods.
When you finally started eating slightly more healthy, all those toxins were released.
So of course you're going to have lack of motivation, it's only natural. It's a coping mechanism, and how your body responds.
Depending on how badly your body has been damaged from all the garbage from your diet, to the actual polluted environment we live, can take months to years for it to completely heal. Let alone just 30 days of lets have some fun on what I consider cute diet fad crazes!
