What you are talking about is called rugby a public school boy in England picked the ball up and ran with William Webb Ellis was his name
Then the yanks changed the rules and slowed it right down and called it football all modern games came from the toff school in England

No it was originally called Association Football in England. In England they called it Soccer(A play on "Association") .
When the sport was introduced by England in the United States it was called Soccer by the English.

They started calling it Football later.

So the word "Soccer" is actually a English origin name.

I wish America didin't have their own weird sports. If Football was big there it would be even better. American Football is such a bad game to watch.

This is the stupidest Joe Rogan has ever been! It's simple. Just look it up. American football evolved from rugby football over the years to today's football rules and the name just stuck. The British came up with the word soccer because it's short for association rules football. Come on, Joe. Lay off the DMT a little bit.

Part 2 The word soccer originated in.......(drum roll) .... England. Other countries who say soccer - Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and I think Ireland. Thats all I know , I don't play or watch so don't talk sh*t. Do your research Ian.

He’s partially right. Prior to the 20th century it was known as soccer in England. "Rugby football" in the UK became "rugger" for short. "Association football" became "soccer." After these two sports spread across the Atlantic, Americans invented their own variant of football based on rugby that they simply called "football" in the early 1900s. ... British people stopped saying "soccer" because of its American connotations.

In England where both games originated Rugby and Soccer were known as Rugby Football and Association Football , as they diverged when people disagreed on rules, in particular grabbing the ball and running. I believe American football derived from Rugby and lost some of the kicking that Rugby has..
Other "Footballs" include Aussie Rules Football (Footy in Australia, whereas Footy in England is Soccer) and Gaelic Football. All these games use feet and hand, with the exception of Association Football.
Also it wasn't in America that Soccer became a word. It happened first in England. It's a British word. We stopped using it about 30-40Y ago.
When the game was exported to America it was called Soccer.

Football in the USA is called that because the shape of the ball is the same as the top of the top of your foot then ankle and shin.

Soccer is a British term that they abandoned because it became too American.

Football became the easy use for association football as rugby became the usual shortening for the variant of football originated at rugby school. They are all codes of football, so calling it soccer or football is right.
