Let me oversimplify the part about the vertical resolution thingy. The markets were basically ignoring the horizontal resolution, then selling 1080p related stuff when the horizontal res is not as much 1920p(it was 1280p) which the market easily over exaggerated.

Maybe I am alone with really good eyes, but I actually can't stand the digital IMAX because I can see the pixels... I refuse to go to them and specifically look for non digital IMAX. Further, my 27" monitor I just got a high refresh QHD (2560x1440) but it feels quite pixelated compared to my older UHD (3840x2160) monitor. Looking at a 24" FHD (1920x1080) monitor now feels absolutely horrible to me, especially reading text. So for some people the extra pixels do feel great.

I will also add to my previous comment. The eye can only see in about 6mega pixels. The difference is those pixel we see are highly dense in a small amount of visual space.

It's all a pointless waste of cash... I have my computer hooked up to a 65 inch 4K tv. There's barely any noticeable difference between watching in 1080 and 4k. Certainly not enough to justify the price difference. I was lucky, I got my TV for free. But knowing how little difference it makes I'm glad I didn't pay for it. Sure it might make a difference if you're some professional, just in the same way that FLAC is better than MP3 to audiophiles... But you're not, you're an average user so picture quality on a cheaper larger TV (for the money) will just look the same. Just as the MP3's you listen to on your $10 player and $5 headphones will sound exactly the same as a FLAC file....

This alone is why I click 1440p or 4K option on any video that has the option, even if I'm only watching on my 1080p screen -- just for the increased bitrate. You notice the difference, especially in gameplay videos or the Slow Mo guys footage when there's a TON of stuff going on on-screen at once.

And that still isn't 8k. There is a limit to how much resolution you really need, I agree. Besides, why bother with 4k screens when most people don't ever calibrate them and the colour is garbage?

I have complex thoughts on this. TL;DR you can probably see the pixels in 2k, maybe 4k too on a screen that big.

The "screens the size of buildings'" were designed for IMAX 70mm film ( 3:32 ). It is equivalent to 12k or 18k, depending on if you believe the Internet estimates or the marketing, respectively. IMAX Xenon projectors often come in pairs of 2k, using sub-pixel offset to make a perceived resolution of 2.9k. I believe on a screen that big, 2k would be obvious and 4k slightly less, judging by sitting closely to my 1080p laptop screen. Maybe IMAX chose 2k and 4k because many digital movies are mastered in that resolution. And maybe 8k would be past the point of diminishing returns. I should go into an electronics store and sit close to an 8k TV sometime to see how close I need ot be to see the pixels

Oh! I just got some useful information! Now I understand why some old television shows look like crap...while others look great. The shows that had the foresight to capture on film...still look good today. I’m guessing that that is the reason why some 1970s films look like crap, even though 1960s films look crystal clear: capturing on magnetic tape?

Wow this is complex and confusing. All of those different formats, ratios, pixels, short-cut names....1080p, SD, HD, 2K, 4K...I have no idea what it all means. I do in a general way, but when I go to record a video on the latest iPhone, and I look at the choices of output...I have no idea what the different choices mean or why one is better than the other (except higher quality is generally better). It seems you’d need to study just this for a significant amount of time just to understand it to the degree that you could either explain it to somebody else or use the knowledge in some way.
